About the Open Source Gear black outline icon

A toothed cogwheel is cut open at the bottom, and its interior becomes a ring with two tails flaring outward like an open keyhole. The break in the closed form reads as open source code, shared tooling, transparency and community-built software. Use it on developer documentation, repository and license pages, contributor guides, tech conference slides, or product sections about open standards.

Eight square teeth ring the outer edge while the inner circle sits high and the two tails widen as they descend, giving the mark a balanced top-heavy weight. It pairs with code brackets, fork and terminal icons in the development set. The narrow tails need a stroke bump below 32 px.

This is the black outline version of the open source gear icon: even, monoline strokes that stay crisp at small sizes and suit clean, minimal interfaces, wireframes and light backgrounds.

It downloads free as an SVG vector or transparent PNG in seven sizes, and the free online editor lets you recolor it, apply gold, silver, neon and gradient styles, add animation, or convert it to EPS, PDF and DXF.
