About the Open Source Gear Ring black filled icon

A cogwheel frames a ring whose ends break open and sweep down to the lower corners, the familiar open source mark built into machinery. Together they communicate shared code, community-built software and free licensing rather than a single vendor product. Fit it into developer documentation, repository and package listings, license or contribution pages, dev tool menus, hackathon material, and engineering slide decks about open standards.

The gear teeth are drawn as rounded squarish blocks spaced evenly around the circle, and the inner ring is thin enough to keep plenty of white space in the center. It works beside code brackets, terminal and git branch icons. Because the teeth are fine, render it at 32 px or above in dense toolbars.

This is the solid black filled version of the open source gear ring icon: a bold silhouette that reads clearly at 16-24 px and on dark or busy backgrounds, and prints well in one colour.

It downloads free as an SVG vector or transparent PNG in seven sizes, and the free online editor lets you recolor it, apply gold, silver, neon and gradient styles, add animation, or convert it to EPS, PDF and DXF.
