How to Insert Icons in Google Docs, Slides & Sheets

Google Docs and Slides have no built-in icon library, so a document that needs a simple arrow, checkmark or warning symbol usually sends you off on a ten-minute image hunt. These three methods keep it under ten seconds.

1. The Infyicon add-on (search without leaving the page)

The Infyicon add-on for Google Workspace adds a sidebar to Docs, Slides and Sheets: search 161,000+ icons, click, and the icon is inserted at your cursor (Docs), on the slide (Slides), or over the selected cell (Sheets).

Icons insert as transparent PNGs, so they sit cleanly on any background color or theme.

2. Drag a PNG straight in

Download any icon as PNG from its icon page — 512px is ideal for slides, 128px for inline document use — and drag the file into your document. Google converts it to an inline image you can resize and wrap text around.

3. Insert > Image > Upload

The classic route: Insert menu > Image > Upload from computer. Same result as dragging; useful when the file lives in Google Drive already (Insert > Image > Drive).

Sizing and alignment tips

In Docs, set icon height to roughly 1.2x your font size for inline icons (14pt text ≈ 18-20px icon) and choose "Behind text" wrapping for decorative corner icons. In Slides, hold Shift while resizing to keep icons square, and use Arrange > Align to line up icon rows precisely. Transparent-PNG icons from Infyicon need no background cleanup.
